A successful design project from Linz, that has it´s beginning in the idea of creating something that is quite different from what one has ever seen before. And it became a weird electric motorbike, inspired by the idea of riding a bull.

There are very different opinions about the appearance of our "biiista" named "Johammer J1":

"They used drugs, when they designed this bike. It is ugly and resembles a weird animal…" (Marco Leimer, TheGap magazine, thegab.at / 15th April 2014 - excerpt 1*)

"This Austrian electric wonder has styling inspired by a cuttlefish, or maybe Cookie Monster, and cool hub-center steering…." (Alexander George, wired.com / 4th April, 2014 - excerpt 2*)

"Johammer's unique looking electro-cruiser motorcycle (…) The Johammer electro-cruiser is up there with the very strangest motorcycle designs I’ve ever come across. I mean, it looks like you’re riding a very surprised snail (…) Apart from the bike’s utterly bizarre retro-futuristic styling, a few other things are immediately striking (…)" (Loz Blain, gizmag.com / 10th April, 2014 - excerpt 3*)

This design polarizes. And that´s what we expected.
This is the signal for something really relevant and new. People talk about it and give positive or even negative comments. But fact is - they talk about. And if you have ever seen this bike, you will remember it. You really have to become acquainted with this unknown creation. "Love it or hate it, but think of it. I love creating strange things." (Leonie Lawniczak, Designer)

The desire of creating is in the nature of the two designers Leonie Lawniczak and Jean-Marie Lawniczak, the mastermind of Yellow (agency for communication in Linz).
"It doesn't matter if there is a two- or three-dimensioned task of design, whether it is graphic design or product design, the design of a vehicle or an ashtray. The essential point is to find the direction from the first idea to a really new dimensioned solution of striking simplicity." (Jean-Marie Lawniczak, Yellow-Designer)

Johammer J1 was born 2009 and branded as "biiista" in 2011.
2014 Hammerschmid renamed the bike. Now it´s on the road with the new appellation "Johammer J1".

Benefit and message
The "biiista" project started 2009 for the company Hammerschmid in Bad Leonfelden (Austria). Based on the technical innovations of the client, the Yellow-Designers created a quite unusual shape for the new electric motorcycle: "We thought about a character, animalistic, something to ride on, like a horse or a bull. Because sitting on a horseback was the first aid to move forward. This was the real beginning of convenient locomotion."

The Yellow-Designers also developed the concept for this new creature: "We started with the idea of -riding a bull- as an archetype-character and transformed it to the prototype-model of an absolutely -non-typical- electric motorcycle.
We wanted to attribute this new motorcycle with an animalistic, aggressive and strong image. The result assumed the shape of a strange riding-beast, aiming to differentiate from the harmless image that still sticks to e-mobility."

The contrast between the rationality of e-power and the attributes of instinctive allure, was labeled by Jean-Marie Lawniczak as "biiista". The bike looks strange but has high speed (electrically limited 120km/h, 75mph), a reach of 150km and a charging time of 2,5h and is completely far away from what we knew till now. These seem to be very new potentials for the design of motorbikes.
